Frequently Asked Questions

What platforms does Hosaka Studio support?

Hosaka Studio runs on Linux with X11 or Wayland. We provide dedicated package repositories for:

  • apt (Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives)
  • dnf (Fedora)
  • pacman (Arch Linux and derivatives)
  • Flatpak (any Linux distribution)

All repositories enable automatic updates through your native software manager. See our install page for setup instructions.

What video formats can I export to?

Hosaka Studio supports MP4 (H.264 + AAC) and WebM (VP9 + Opus). MP4 is best for sharing on social media and video platforms. WebM is ideal for web embedding and Linux playback.

Why do MP4 videos appear black on some Linux distributions?

Your exported video is perfectly fine! This is a local playback issue, not a problem with the video file.

Why it happens: Some Linux distributions (like Fedora) don't include H.264 video codecs by default due to patent licensing. The video file itself is valid and will play correctly on other devices, phones, or when uploaded online.

Solutions:

  • Install H.264 codecs for your distribution
  • Export to WebM format instead (works everywhere without extra setup)
Why does my microphone sound distorted or have reverb?

This is usually caused by your microphone input gain being set too high. Fresh Linux installations with PipeWire/WirePlumber often default microphone volume to 100%, which causes clipping and distortion.

Why it happens: Microphones aren't designed to run at full gain. When the input level is too high, the audio signal clips, creating distortion, reverb-like artifacts, and overall poor quality.

Solution:

  • Open pavucontrol (PulseAudio Volume Control), go to the Input Devices tab, and lower your microphone volume to around 20-40%
  • Alternatively, use your desktop's Sound settings panel to adjust the input level slider
  • In alsamixer, press F4 for capture controls and lower "Mic Boost" and "Capture" levels
How does automatic transcription work?

After each recording, Hosaka transcribes your mic audio locally using Whisper - the same model that powers many transcription services, running entirely on your device. No audio is uploaded anywhere.

The result is an .srt subtitle file included with your video export, ready to upload to YouTube, embed in a player, or import into any editor.
